Charles Paul Markert

September 10, 1945 — August 16, 2024

Charles Paul Markert passed away on Friday, August 16th, surrounded by his family.

Charles was born on September 10th, 1945 in Hawkinsville, GA, where he also met and married his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years, Annie Laura Markert.

Charles began his career after high school when he attended Forest Ranger School, then working as a forestry consultant for 5 years. With two young kids, Charles boldly began to pursue an undergraduate degree in Forestry at Auburn University - the alma mater he loved passionately - inspiring all four children and four of his seven grandchildren to attend. After one year in Forestry, Charles switched into Civil Engineering - the career he held until he died. Charles graduated from Auburn in 1973, and in 1976 he began his 20-year stint as the Chambers County Engineer, raising his family in Lafayette, Alabama. In 1996, Charles took a new role as the Calhoun County Engineer, where he served until his retirement from the state after 13 years. Even after his official retirement, Charles continued to leverage his warm personality, golf skills, and love of Longhorn Steakhouse in business development for many private engineering firms. He was also a mentor to many young men throughout his life.

Mr. Charles, Charlie, Daddy, Pop - of all the many names by which we’ll fondly remember him, perhaps the most impactful role and title he held was man of God. Charles was a deacon at First Baptist Church, Lafeyette, AL and Golden Spring Baptist Church in Anniston, AL, shepherding his family as well as his church family to Christ. He was also a member of Gideons International. His impact is evident by the outpouring of those whose lives he touched. We will miss him fiercely but are so grateful to know he is now healed and rejoicing with Jesus.

Charles is survived by his wife, Annie Laura and their four children and seven grandchildren: Lisa Langford (Richard) and daughters Leslie Langford and Lindsay Horn (Bryant); Tim Markert and son Paul Markert; Amy Markert Singletary (Frank) and sons Dalton Singletary and Mitchell Singletary; Cal Markert (Dona) and daughters Hannah Ryals (Austin) and Lauren Markert. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Ann Goss (Alvin) and only surviving aunt Opal Wilcox of Hawkinsville, Georgia.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to all of the medical staff at Ascension St. Vincent’s Hospital, as well as the friends and family who have supported us during this time. A visitation service will be held Sunday, August 18th from 1pm to 3pm at Golden Springs Baptist Church, Anniston, AL, with a memorial service following at 3pm with Dr. Roland Brown officiating.
