Charles William Newberry
Charles William Newberry, 88, of Hawkinsville passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at his residence. Services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday,December 31, 2011 at Broad Street Baptist Church in Hawkinsville. Burial will be at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Lizella, Georgia. Dr. Kelly Pritchett and Rev. JeffWaters will officiate.
A native of Bibb County, Mr. Newberry was a member of Broad Street Baptist Church, a member of the Auditorium Sunday School class and the Senior Adult group. He was also a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors.
Mr. Newberry served in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was employed by the Georgia Power Company for 40 years, retiring in 1986 as line crew foreman in Hawkinsville. Mr. Newberry was born May 15, 1923 to Joseph Virgil Newberry and Mattie Dover Newberry. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy Vickers Newberry, special friend, Dean Rodgers Newberry, brothers Albert, Morris andAllen Newberry; sisters, Ruby Stokes and Minnie Balkcom.
He is survived by a daughter, Margaret N. (Mitchell "Jabo") Tharpe of Hawkinsville anda son, Rickey (Donna) Newberry of Piney Flatts, TN; one brother, Billy Joe (Martha) Newberry of Haddock, Ga.; three grandchildren, Chuck (Clare) Tharpe of Columbus, Dawn (Keith) Warnock of Hawkinsville and Brian (Stephanie) Tharpe of Macon.He also is survived by six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home.
