Charles Edward Stone passed away after a long illness on July 1, 2018.
A native of Doerun, GA, and a graduate of Doerun High School, he attended ABAC and then the University of Georgia, graduating in 1962. He married Martha Irene Norred in 1959 and began a career in education that spanned 50 years, beginning at Madison County High School and moved on to many other positions, including Darlington School in Rome; Advisor to the President at Albany Jr. College; the first headmaster of Windsor Park Academy in Albany, GA; instructor at Clayton Jr. College; principal of Blackshear Trail Elementary School in Cordele, GA; Assistant Superintendent of Pulaski County Schools, teacher at Perry High School and others, finishing his career as the first Director of Middle GA Tech-Hawkinsville Campus.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Edward and Sara Roberts Stone of Doerun, GA and his brother, Allen Chandler Stone of Huntsville, Alabama. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Martha Irene Norred of Hawkinsville; his sons Rob (Layne) and Wes (Jennifer), his daughter Verna, 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and many beloved extended family members.
He was a man of many gifts and a wonderful teacher who loved music, drama, playing the piano, arranging flowers, and making people laugh. He was a gifted storyteller and entertainer and spent many hours volunteering at nursing homes, hospitals, and anywhere he was asked and needed. He and his wife Irene also loved antiques and owned several antique shops and booths over the years. He and Irene also loved restoring old houses, several of which are in Hawkinsville.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 5 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Hawkinsville, GA at 3:00pm with The Reverend Aaron Brewer and The Reverend Deacon Jim Strickland officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm on Thursday, immediately preceding the service, at the St. Luke's Fellowship Hall. The family wishes to especially thank the staff and administration at Taylor Regional Hospital for their excellent care. The family would prefer that donations be made to Taylor Regional Hospital or St. Luke's Episcopal Church.Honorary pallbearers will be Taylor Regional Hospital nursing staff and administration members.
