DAVID WILSON PHELPS
David Wilson Phelps, of Hawkinsville, passed away Friday, July 10, 2009.He was born on August 11, 1918 in Pike County, Alabama, the son of the late David Williams Phelps and Sarah B. Phelps.Mr. Phelps was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Johnnie Mae Hannah Phelps and his two sons, Richard Bruce Phelps and Earl Wayne Phelps, also five brothers and one sister.He was a member of the Broad Street Baptist Church of Hawkinsville.Mr. Phelps moved his family to Hawkinsville from Alabama in 1953 and made a career as the mill maintenance and master electrician of Opelika Manufacturing Corporation.He was known as "Phelps" or "Wilson" by fellow co-workers.
Mr. Phelps was a proud veteran of World War II.He was with the 11th Airborne Division in the U. S. Army serving in the Phillipines and Japan.He was a gun sargent and received many medals and awards.
Survivors include daughters, Gwen Phelps England (Jim) and Coni Phelps all of Hawkinsville; son, David Tim Phelps (Elaine) of Byromville; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren, where he was lovingly known as "Papa" to all of his family and close friends.
Mr. Phelps was a loving, hardworking, honest American who always held his family and country in the highest regard and was certainly held in the highest esteem and respect by all of his family and friends.He will surely be missed and his memory cherised always.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009 in the chapel of Clark Funeral Home with Dr. Kelly Pritchett and Rev. Freddie Hogg officiating.Burial will be in the Pulaski-Bleckley Memorial Gardens in Bleckley County.
