Ethel Duggan Polk
Ethel Duggan Polk, age 97, died on February 2, 2009 at her home in Hawkinsville, Ga.The service will be at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Gary Abbott officiating.Interment will be at Orange Hill Cemetery in Hawkinsville.
Mrs. Polk was the wife of James K. Polk for forty-eight years until his death in 1989.During his career as a lawyer the couple lived on Long Island, NY.When he retired they lived near Highland, NC and later in Jacksonville, FL.After Mr. Polk's death, Ethel Polk returned to Hawkinsville where she grew up.Her parents were David Edmund and Pauline Stewart Duggan.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Polk enjoyed extensive travel with her husband and participated in many varied activities.She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Chapter Regent in Nassau County, NY.She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary both in Jacksonville and Hawkinsville.As an active member of her church until her health prevented it, Mrs. Polk was a member of the Altar Guild of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining family and friends.
Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Grace Duggan Jordan of Columbus, formerly of Talbotton, GA, her brother, Francis Arthur Duggan of Atlanta, a stepdaughter, Jean Polk Mars Murray of Warner Robins, a stepson, William Moreau Polk of Homestead, Florida, two step-grandsons, Daniel Mars of Byron and Stephen Mars of Bonaire and a number of nieces and nephews.Memorials may be sent to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or to the charity of choice.
