Howard Metz Martin, Iii

Howard Metz Martin III, 76, passed away peacefully at his home on August 26, 2022. He was born on April 21, 1946 to Howard Metz Martin Jr. and Barbara Ann Hudson Martin of Hawkinsville. “Pete” graduated from Hawkinsville High School in 1964. He then attended Middle Georgia College and Lively Technical School in Tallahassee where he met his wife Carole Jo Grosh, daughter of Margaret and Gerald Grosh. They were married on April 3, 1971.

Pete and Carole later returned to Hawkinsville, where Pete began Martin Brothers Farms with his brother, Barry, in business together over 30 years, during which time they received awards for cotton and peanut production. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Pulaski County Fire Department and served on various boards and committees, including being elected Pulaski County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor. Pete had many hobbies including piloting his private plane, hunting, and fishing.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dawn Martin Peavy (Wayne) and nephew, Marcus Eugene Martin (Robin).  Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Carole, his son Christopher Metz Martin (Ginger) and his daughter Amy Marie Martin Hayward (Chad); four grandchildren, Grantson Metz Martin (Sarah), Wellsley Michae Martin (Trey Bowen, fiancee), Leah Marie Hayward, Brant Eric Hayward; his siblings, Barry Hudson Martin (Alice), Ann Martin Moore (Dan); his nieces and nephew Monica Martin Bass, Mitzi Martin Gay (Chad), Amber Peavy Moore (Chris), Ashley Peavy DaVanzo (Bill), Cohen Moore and Katie Moore; his great aunt Jeannie Martin Meadows; brother-in-law Elliott Grosh (Patti) and sister-in-law LuAnn McNeer; several great nieces and nephews; family friends George and Sue Walker of Tallahassee and their family. He also leaves behind his special dog, Lucy.

The family will have a private memorial service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Hawkinsville, where Pete will be interred in the church columbarium. The family asks that donations be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in lieu of flowers. No formal visitation will be held. The family wishes to thank Clark Funeral Home, charged with arrangements.
