Irene Keen Hawkins passed away on Friday, November 7, 2008.She was 94 years old.

A Funeralservice to celebrate her life will be held at Westview Baptist Churchin Hawkinsville, Ga. on Sunday, November 9, 2008 with Rev. Freddie Rhodes and Rev. Sydney Odom officiating.Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery in Rochelle, Ga.Her loving, generous spirit will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but she will always remain in our hearts and minds.

Irene, born April 20, 1914, was the eighth child in her family of five brothers and seven sisters.She was the daughter of Simon and Lila Watson Keen.She grew up in Abbeville, Ga., graduated from Abbeville High, graduated with honors from Norman Park Jr. College, Norman Park, Ga., and GSCW in Milledgeville, Ga., where she received a BS in Elementary Education.She enjoyed a long career as an educator, teaching in Cuberson Elementary, Colquitt, County,; Arabi Elementary, Crisp County, Blackshear Trail Elementary, Cordele, Ga., and Hawkinsville Elementary, Hawkinsville, Ga.. She retired from Pulaski County School System after having taught for 25 years where she touched and inspired the lives of many.She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.

Irene was married to Rev. Herbert M. Hawkins on October 11, 1936.As a pastor's wife, she was committed to her church, her family and her community.She taught Sunday School for many years in various churches mostly in mid and south Georgia as she willingly served the Lord beside her husband.She was a member of Westview Baptist Church of Hawkinsville and the Friendship Sunday School class.She was a charter member of the Centerville Senior Citizens Club where she served as Program Chairman and also as President.

Her beloved husband of 38 years, Rev. Herbert M. Hawkins, her son, Kenneth D. Hawkins, six brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.Left to cherish her memory are her son, Don W. Hawkins and wife Lavada Hawkins of LaCombe, La; her daughter Judi Jennings and husband, Jerry B. Jennings of Hawkinsville, Ga.; her seven grandchildren, Scott Hawkins, Kim Holden and Al Hawkins of Mandeville, La; Jay Hawkins of Winston Salem, N.C. and Chris Hawkins of Washington, D. C.; Jerre Jones of Perry, Ga. and Jody Jennings of Greenville, S. C.; twenty-one great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, two sisters, Frances Maddox and Faustine Sheffield, both of Fitzgerald, Ga. and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Danny Hawkins, Max Sheffield, Charlie Keen, Jake Keen, Billy Hawkins and Andrew Keen.
