Jackie Bernard Sapp

October 10, 1941 — January 20, 2023

On Friday, January 20th, Jackie Sapp, a beloved husband, dad, brother and friend, went home to see Jesus. He was eighty-one. Funeral services for Jackie will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Streetman and Rev. Luke Watson officiating. The family will greet friends at Clark Funeral Home on Monday, January 23, 2023 from 5p.m. to 8p.m. Internment will be in the family plot at Wesley Chapel Cemetery.

Jackie was born to Donis and Mellitus (Bud) Sapp, Jackie lived his life to the fullest.  He began his career early as a newspaper delivery boy with the help of his sister Betty. As a teenager he worked at the Hartford gas and grocery station and owned half of a salvage yard with his dad. He was a Hawkinsville Red Devil Football Right Half Back under Bobby Gentry from 1954-1958.  Upon graduation, Jackie managed the Food Basket. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War from February 1962 to February 1966 beginning as a Morse Code Operator and ending as Sergeant.   Upon his return to the Hawkinsville area, he worked at McKinney's Grocery until his career at Way Brother's began in 1972. Jackie was beloved by all at Way Brothers and worked there for 50 years. Jackie took a trip to the foothills of Kentucky with a fellow serviceman and met the love of his life.  Judy and Jackie married in July 1966 and enjoyed 57 beautiful years together. They had a full family with 3 girls of their own and 50 foster children that still refer to them as mama and daddy. Granddaddy was so very proud of each of his grandchildren.

Jackie faithfully served at Antioch Baptist Church on various committees and as song director.  He began his singing career as a young boy practicing church with a friend as the preacher and he as the song leader.  Jesus was standing at the pearly gates when Jackie arrived and said, "Well done my good and faithful servant."

Jackie Sapp was loved by all and was a servant to all.  He will be missed in his community as a leader, business man and friend.  Jackie was always willing to lend a helping hand and financially help others in need. He believed that your circumstances do not dictate your ability to achieve as well as that you should always help others. He might have been a little thrifty too.

If you knew Jackie, you knew he loved to laugh and to fish.  He loved to tell stories and play tricks on others.  In his girls' teenage years, he was the one who instigated toilet papering yards of church members and friends. He spent many a Thursday afternoon fishing at the Way's camp house or Hugh Lawson’s Pond. In Heaven we believe Jackie's either singing with Lamar Richardson and Johnny Sigmon or fishing with Richard Johnson. He will be greatly missed.

Those left to forever cherish his memory include his wife, Judith Sapp; daughters, Donna (Mauricio III) Trevino, Karen Herring and Jacqueline Chestnut; brother, Bobby (Bonnie) Sapp; sisters, Betty Conner, Sarah Nell (Freddy) Thompson and Nita (Chuck) Hastings; uncles, James (Grace) Davis and Clint Davis; grandchildren, Taylor (Madi) Sapp, Kayla (Jesse) Quinones, Raven Herring, Abigayle Chestnut, Mauricio Trevino, IV, Rosemarie Trevino, Wynne Trevino and Shelby Herring Gregory. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, Mae Quinones, Maverick Quinones, Isaiah Gregory, Jackson Gregory and Leah Grace Gregory.
