James Edward Whelchel, 81, of Hawkinsville, Ga. died Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at his residence.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011 at Broad Street Baptist Church with Dr. Kelly Pritchett and Rev. Jeff Waters officiating.Burial will be at Macon Memorial Park in Macon, Ga. at 3 p.m.
Mr. Whelchel was a native of Butts County, Ga. and a member of Broad Street Baptist Church.He was retired from Riverwood International as a tour foreman and was a veteran of the U. S. Army Korean Conflict.James was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Grinstead Whelchel of Hawkinsville, Ga.; sons, Richard Edward (Marilyn L. Daigle) Whelchel of Charlotte, N. C., James Ronald (Lynn Thomas) Whelchel of Macon, Ga.; sisters, Betty Jo Duckworth of Macon, Ga. and Sarah Whelchel Darley of Eatonton, Ga.; special friends, Judy (Dean) Johnson of Macon, Ga.; threegrandchildren and one great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Causey, Brian Whelchel, Mickey Sapp, Dr. Reuben Roberts, Austin Buchanon and Joseph Brennan.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jabo Tharpe, Delmar Howard, Ted Laster, Charlie Hill, Lamar Conner and Harold Lindsey.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at Clark Funeral Home.
