Joseph O. Hazelwood died peacefully at home in Pleasant Hill, CA on 13 April, 2016. He is survived by: his daughter Kije, her husband Bob Reichman, granddaughters Phara and Melissa and great granddaughter Amber; son Joseph, his wife Suzanne, granddaughter Alison and great grandsons TJ and Kevin; son Joshua his wife Tricia, grandson Samuel and granddaughter Grace. He was predeceased by his son Matthew and is survived by daughter-in-law Constanza, granddaughter Giuliana and grandson Thomas. He was also predeceased by his wife Margaret of 55 years, and his close companion for his last years, Jean Fickle. Joseph was born on November 21, 1921 in Silverwood Indiana. He was an undergraduate at Purdue University at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the onset of WWII. Shortly thereafter he applied for and was accepted in the US Navy's Officer's Candidate program and Pilot's training Program. Upon graduation he accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps and served on active duty with the Marines until the conclusion of the War, primarily in the South Pacific, flying both torpedo/fighter and fighter aircraft. After the War he joined Pan American Airlines in Miami, and subsequently transferred to New York. During his nearly 40 year career at Pan Am he rose to the rank of Captain (both 707 & 747). He was a long time resident of Huntington NY and Simsbury Ct, and in recent years a part time resident of Pleasant Hill CA. He lived a long full life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Burial will be in Hawkinsville GA and as he wished, services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 5 Joy Street, Boston, MA 02108 as a reflection of his love of the outdoors.
