Mary Nelson Beckum

Mary Nelson Beckum passed away at Southern Pines Retirement Villa on June 18, 2023 in Hawkinsville, Georgia. Mary was born in Hawkinsville on August 17, 1936 to Ethelle and George Nelson.

Mary graduated from Hawkinsville High School and later received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Georgia where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma (Go Dawgs!). She later continued to pursue her education at Georgia Southwestern earning a Master’s Degree. Mary taught History and Government at Baker Academy and Hawkinsville High School. Mary retired and lived on St. Simons Island for many years. St. Simons was her “Happy Place.” Her hobbies included reading, biking, playing tennis, watching sports and being outside in the sun. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. Mary is predeceased by her husband, Frank Beckum, her parents and several aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her son, Butch Zell of Hawkinsville, Georgia as well as several cousins. Mary’s family extends special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Southern Pines and to Agape Hospice for the resources and guidance they provided.

There will be a graveside service at Orange Hill Cemetery in Hawkinsville, Georgia on June 20, 2023 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Gary Abbott officiating.
