Peggy Ann Mays Barker

November 25, 1938 — June 23, 2023

Peggy Ann Mays Barker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law and friend departed this life to enter her eternal home on June 23, 2023. The family will greet friends on Sunday evening, June 25, 2023 from 6pm to 8pm in the chapel of Clark Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Monday, June 26, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Hawkinsville with Dr. Don McClung and Rev. Tracy Mays officiating. Burial will be in the Barker Family Plot at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Peggy was the 6th of 8 children born to Aline and Ralph Waco Mays on November 25, 1938. Being born into the prominent Mays family, she grew up in the Blue Springs Community of Pulaski County which was primarily made up of the Mays Clan. She was always surrounded with many cousins, aunts and uncles. In her formative years she attended Blue Springs School and graduated from Hawkinsville High School with the Class of 1956. She was popular with her classmates and remained close to many throughout her life.

Shortly after graduation, she met and dated the lover of her life on December 6, 1956, she wed her life long partner Amos “Zeke” Barker and for 65 years they shared a beautiful life together. They were blessed with two precious children, Kathy Ann Barker Rhodes and Joel Todd Barker.

Early in their marriage it was decided that if ever they had children Peggy would stay home during their early years and he would make the living. As time passed, it was decided Peggy would enter the World of work. She accepted a position with the Pulaski County Board of Education where she worked for 25 faithful years before retiring.

Peggy was a loving, caring person who always put others before herself. She was an outgoing person and her home was always opened to her family and her children’s friends. She loved to cook, enjoyed gardening and her home and yards were always immaculately kept. She always loved beautiful things, whether it was clothes, lovely homes, nature or beauty in others.

After her retirement she her husband became certified judges for the Miss Georgia Preliminary Pageants and traveled over Georgia to fulfill this obligation. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hawkinsville where she was actively involved until her declining health.

She is survived by her son, Joel Todd Barker; grandchildren, Sam Barker of Hawkinsville, Sarah Beth Barker of Athens, Russ Rhodes of Pineview and Wes Rhodes of Perry; great granddaughter, Lily Rhodes and two brothers, J.H. and Charles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos “Zeke” Barker; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Terry Rhodes; brothers, Waco Mays, Lloyd Mays and Tommy Mays; sisters, Joyce Faulk and Villa McClung.

Pallbearers will be Ken Mullis, Keith Long, Shawn Tripp, Wes Brown, Chris Dollar and John Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Dawson, Rodney Dawson, Gary Dawson, Darrell Brown, Roger Harvey and Jimmy Harvey.
