William E. Coleman, M.D., age 90, of Hawkinsville, Georgia passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Southern Pines Retirement Villa in Hawkinsville. Funeral services will be held at the Hawkinsville First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11a.m. with Rev. Paula Lewis and Rev. Dr. Gary Abbott officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Clark Funeral Home from 5p.m. to 7p.m. Burial will be at Orange Hill Cemetery.
Dr. Coleman was born in Graymont, Georgia on April 23, 1926 to Willie O. Coleman and Jottye Rountree Coleman. He attended public schools at Emanuel County Institute. He graduated from North Georgia College in Dahlonega and entered military service in 1944. He served in the infantry and signal corps in World War II in the United States and in Japan where he was assigned to the signal center of General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo. On discharge from the army he entered the University of Georgia and then went to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He graduated from the medical college in 1951 with his M.D. degree. He did his internship and residency at the Macon Hospital in Macon, Georgia where he met and married his wife, Nancy. In 1953 he and Nancy moved to Hawkinsville where he was in the private practice of medicine for the next 40 years. He retired from active practice in 1993.
He was a member of AKK medical fraternity, AOA Honor Medical Society, The Medical Association of Georgia, The American Medical Association, The American Academy of Family Practice, Fellow of The American Academy of Family Practice, The American Board of Family Practice (charter member), The Taylor Regional Hospital Staff (former chief of staff), Pulaski County Board of Health (former board chairman), Medical Examiner of Pulaski County, Medical Director of Pinewood Manor Nursing Home, Regional Board for Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse (former chairman), and the Board of Trustees of Taylor Regional Hospital. He also served on the Hawkinsville Pulaski Arts Council (former president) and the Hawkinsville Historic Preservation Commission.
He is survived by his son, William Edwin Coleman, Jr., M.D.; daughter, Candee Coleman Wilson; daughter-in-law, Diane Floyd Coleman; son-in-law, Steve E. Wilson and his grandchildren, Libby Coleman, James Wilson, and Wil (Keelah) Wilson.
