William Orr Tribble

William Orr "Bill" Tribble, 80, passed away Friday, June 22nd, 2012 at Pine Pointe
Hospice in Macon after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill, the oldest child of Robert Orr Tribble and Effie Barton Mitchell, was born
January 7th, 1932 at the family home in Lavonia, Franklin County, Georgia. He
attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a degree in Journalism. He
served in the United States Army Occupational Forces in Germany in 1953-55. He
worked for the Gainesville Morning Sun before coming to Macon to work for the Macon
Telegraph. His career in news coverage continued at WMAZ Radio and Television as a
reporter, TV News Director, producer and host of Close-Up, and Executive Editor for
35 years.
After retirement, Bill volunteered at Alexander II Magnet School for 15 years,
sharing his love of journalism by instructing students in production of the school
newscast. The Media Center at the newly renovated school was named the Tribble Media
Center in honor of Bill and Mary Tribble and their support of Alexander II.
Bill was an Ordained Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, and a
member of the church audiovisual committee for over 20 years. He was a member of the
Macon Bibb County Library Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1978, and was Chairman
during the renovation and extension of the Washington Memorial Library. During his
years at WMAZ, he was actively involved in "Kids Vote!" educating and involving
children in the democratic process. He received many awards and recognitions for his
journalistic activities, including three Associated Press Awards for Excellence in
Editorial Commentary (1984,'85,'86), three Georgia Association of Educators "School
Bell" Media Awards for his editorials in support of public schools, and two Emmy
Awards for his Close-Up documentaries on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (1977) and
on the GOP and David Duke (1992). He also received two "Extra Mile" awards from the
Bibb County Board of Education for his volunteer activities.
His parents and sister, Mary Cleta Young, preceded him in death. Survivors include
his wife of 44 years, Mary Goslin Tribble, daughters Gena Tribble (Tom Gambill) of
Houston Texas, Jennifer Tribble (Peter Treiber) of Macon, and granddaughter Maia
Louise Gambill of Houston. Other survivors include brother Robert (Frances) Tribble
of Manchester Georgia, brother-in-law Mike (Linda) Goslin of Hawkinsville; and
nieces and nephews Mitch (Patty) Tribble, Donna (Barry) Berndt, Ginger (Chris)
Martin, Lisa (Bobby) Thacker, Betsy Goslin (Ben Berg), as well as several
great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am June 25th at the First Baptist Church of
Christ at 511 High Place, Macon with Dr. Robert Richardson, Rev. Julie Long, and
Rev. Jody Long officiating. Members of the Adult III Couples Sunday School Class and
Audio Visual Committee will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be at the
church one hour before the service. Graveside services will be held that afternoon
at 3 pm at Powers Cemetery on GA 257-N Hawkinsville Georgia. Directions may be found

It was Bill's wish that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Alexander II
Magnet School Tribble Media Fund, Suite 310, 484 Mulberry Street, Macon GA 31201; or
to the First Baptist Church of Christ Building Fund 511 High Place Macon Ga 31201.
